It's everything together, but it's also separate.
I find that "everything" mashed together creates the overwhelm - but then it really takes on it's own psychosomatic functionality from there.
I carry it around parallel to all the things that made it.
It defines my mood, it sets the tolerance for one more single thing to show up in my life.
Most importantly - It doesn't go away until I see it and name it.
"Oh! I'm overwhelmed!"
... "Hi overwhelm, how did you get here?"
Once acknowledged, I can take real actions to dissolve the build-up of (usually) small little things. I can identify which things really are big and place them front of mind where they belong while the rest falls away.
Prioritizing.
Refocusing.
Sometimes it takes a little help from others.
It certainly helps to have a partner or a whole family that can openly discuss "what's important"... and forgive you when you've already made a big mess over the things that aren't.
Step back, see what you're really carrying around, maybe set a few things down.
